Fun Facts #1!!!!

Today I'm introducing a new feature to my little ole blog. It's called "FUN FACTS!!" I'm so excited! I have been accused (by people who are supposed to love me) of being a geeky nerd just 'cause I was on my high school's Quiz Bowl team (and the district high scorer my senior year, thankyouverymuch). This is not completely true. I was a nerd, but not a geeky one. Really. But what's a girl who has a freakish ability to remember insignificant knowledge supposed to do? Anywho, I learn things from time to time that blow my skirt up but are not significant enough to warrant an entire post. Also, I have a couple of ADORABLE nephews who are fond of sharing their own fun facts, generally about medieval weaponry or the insect world.

My fun facts will probably not be in these two fields per se, but they are in honor of Jacob and Curtis nonetheless.

So, here we go:

Fun Fact #1: "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" as sung during the traditional seventh inning stretch is in fact ONLY THE CHORUS!! The song actually has several verses and centers around the story of a girl who refuses to go out on a date unless the guy will take her out to the ballgame. A girl after my own heart.

Nelly Kelly loved baseball games,
Knew the players, knew all their names,
You could see her there ev'ry day,
Shout "Hurray," when they'd play.
Her boy friend by the name of Joe
Said, "To Coney Isle, dear, let's go,"
Then Nelly started to fret and pout,
And to him I heard her shout.

"Take me out to the ball game,
Take me out with the crowd.
Buy me some peanuts and cracker jack,
I don't care if I never get back,
Let me root, root, root for the home team,
If they don't win it's a shame.
For it's one, two, three strikes, you're out,
At the old ball game."

Nelly Kelly was sure some fan,
She would root just like any man,
Told the umpire he was wrong,
All along, good and strong.
When the score was just two to two,
Nelly Kelly knew what to do,
Just to cheer up the boys she knew,
She made the gang sing this song.

(I had to. I bleed Dodger blue and this picture is mythical. Click here if you, like my own sister, don't know why.)

Okay... so what was happening when that picture was taken? I'm sure there's some story those of us who do not bleed blue are missing out on... don't get me wrong, if I bled baseball, I'd bleed blue but alas... I do not.
That being said.... I've seen a lot of base/soft/ball games lately with 3 kids in the sport. Jacob is in the playoff part of his league.. Carly and Sammy go through july. 2 games a week for Carcar and one for sammy. Jacob's had 2 games a week since end of may but w/the playoffs it's only been one a week for the last couple. Add that up... it's a lot of baseball!!!!!

and thanks for the fun fact. I had NO idea there was anymore to that song.

Jamie,
I added a link to edumacate you about the glory that was Kirk Gibson's 9th inning 2 out 3-2 count homerun in game 1 of the 1988 World Series. I can't believe that you grew up in the same house as me. Sheesh!

Do get a bump up on the cool train express if I tell you that I remember watching that game with my dad??!! It's true, I'm not just saying that. And to prove the truth of it I will even tell you that, and this part I'm not proud of, I went to bed just before that famous homerun (I was a growing 12 yr old, I needed rest). I woke up the next morning and my dad told me what happend. I couldn't believe it! I knew I'd missed something that would go down in history.

Wendy,
I knew I liked you. I'm so sorry that you went to bed. That's the kind of thing that generally happens to me.

I remember being about 16 years old at an Angel game (gag) before it occured to me that the real words weren't, "Root, root, root for the Dodgers."

Although I am tragically uninformed about their greatest hits... I love my memories of being at Dodger games.. I don't love my single memory of being at a dodger game at the Padres stadium and having beer sloshed on me on PURPOSE by IDIOT fans who can't let little girls and their dad root in peace for the opposing team
AND
Maury I am so honored by my very own little link and I DID click and I DID learn and I AM impressed.
